Business owners

You’ve built the business. What do you want it to give you back?

Financial planning and coaching for business owners. We start with what you want from the next ten years, then work out what it would take.

A fit business owner speaks from a bright meeting room in a calm business-advice video poster frame.

In 30 seconds

  • A plan that starts with what you want from the next ten years
  • Your pension, investments and protection looked at alongside the company
  • An adviser with an MBA, who will work with your accountant
  • An initial fee of 3% on the first £100,000 and less above that, then 0.68% a year, plus fund and platform charges
  • Nothing to pay until you’ve seen the plan and said yes

If you could step back from the business five years from now, what would you do with the time?

A business owner takes a quiet weekday dog walk along a chalk path in the South Downs.

It’s a better question than “what’s your pension worth?”, and it’s one most owners haven’t had time to think about. They’ve been busy. Twenty years of putting the business first, with their own plans at the back of the queue.

So the company has cash in the bank and a value on paper, and the owner has a pension they stopped paying into years ago.

A lot rides on one sale, to one buyer, at a price nobody can promise.

At Staltosi Financial Planning I help owners work out what they want next, and build something of their own alongside the business to pay for it.

The plan sets out what you need and when, and how much of it has to come from the company.

I’m Si Lees. I’m an independent financial planner. I also have an MBA and I’m a Chartered Manager, so I understand how a company works as well as how a pension does.

And I’ll work with your accountant. I’m there to add to what they do.

It starts with a conversation about you, an hour or two.

Then I gather the facts, speak to your existing providers and spend a month or two on research.

I come back with a written plan. It covers your pension, your investments, the cover your family needs and the figure you’re aiming for.

If you want to go ahead, I put it in place. We review it together every year, and you can ring me in between. If something big comes up, like a lease or an offer, I’ll show you what it does to your plan.

I’ll tell you what all of that costs before you agree to any of it.

If most of what you own is tied up in the company, and you’d like a plan for what comes next, book a discovery meeting with me at Staltosi Financial Planning.

I can’t tell you what your business will sell for or what markets will do. Here’s what I can tell you. You won’t pay me anything until you’ve seen my recommendations and decided to go ahead. If you decide against it, you owe me nothing.

What changes

Now
With a plan
“One day” is as far as your own plans go
You know what you want next and what it would take
A valuable company and very little outside it
Money going into your own name each year
Cash piling up in the business account
A plan for that cash, agreed with your accountant
A pension you stopped feeding years ago
A pension the company is paying into again
No figure for what you need from a sale
A figure, and a date
Life cover you took out with the mortgage and haven’t looked at since
Protection for your family and your fellow shareholders
You change the subject when someone at home asks “when can we retire?”
You can answer the question

What I help with

What you want next

What you’d like the business to give you back, and when. We start there, with a year and a number.

Your number

A cashflow plan that shows what you need, when you’ll need it, and how much of it has to come from the business.

Taking money out

Salary, dividends and company pension contributions each have a place. I’ll work out the mix with your accountant. I don’t replace them, and I won’t give you tax advice that cuts across theirs.

Cash in the company

If the business is holding more than it needs, we can look at what to do with it.

Protection

Cover for your family if something happens to you, and cover between shareholders so the business and the families are both looked after.

The exit

A sale, a handover, or deciding not to sell at all. I’m not a corporate finance adviser and I won’t value your business. My job is to make sure you know what you personally need from any deal before you sit down to negotiate it.

Passing it on

Planning for the next generation, alongside your solicitor.

Thinking it through

A new venture, bringing in a partner, stepping back to three days a week. Talk it over with me first. For the contract itself you’ll still want your solicitor.

A client like you

[A short, real client story to come from Si: a business owner, what was going on, and what we organised. The Alternatives document sets out the shape.]

  • Who they are, in a line
  • What was going on
  • What they wanted
  • What we organised
  • One sentence from them

How it works, in short

See all six steps

1. We talk

A discovery meeting of an hour or two. It’s free and you’re not committed to anything.

2. I do the homework

You fill in some forms, we meet again, and then I spend four to eight weeks gathering the facts and researching your options.

3. You see the plan

I show you what I recommend, in writing, with the costs set out. You decide whether to go ahead, and you’ve paid nothing up to this point.

4. I put it in place and stay with you

I handle the paperwork. After that we review the plan every year and you can ring me in between. The fees page shows what that costs.

Things people say to me

“My business is my pension.”

It might be. But that’s everything riding on one sale to one buyer. Build something alongside it and the sale no longer has to be perfect.

“I’ll get a better return leaving the money in the business.”

You may well. Nobody is suggesting you take it all out. The question is how much of your future should rest on one company, even a good one.

“My accountant deals with tax.”

Good, and I’d want to work with them. They look after the company’s accounts and tax. I look at what you personally need the money to do over the next thirty years. It works better when we talk to each other.

“I’ll deal with it when I sell.”

Some things take a few years to set up, and some allowances are annual, so they can’t all be claimed back later. It’s easier to start before a sale is on the table.

“0.68% a year on a big number is a big number. What do I get?”

A plan with the figure you need in it, reviewed with you every year. Your pensions and investments looked after. And one person who knows your whole position and will talk a decision through before you make it. If that stops being worth it, you can end the arrangement.

“I haven’t got time.”

Around six hours of your time, spread over a few months, and I can come to you.

Before you decide, run it past Si.

Book a discovery meeting and bring your questions. It’s free and there’s no obligation.
